REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Documents needed to travel to Tanzania

The documents required to travel to Tanzania are constantly monitored and, although the information provided here may change, it is advisable to always check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of your country.

  1. PASSPORT VALIDITY A valid passport with at least six months of residual validity is required. For any changes in passport validity regulations, please inquire at the Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate in Italy or contact your travel agent.

  2. ENTRY VISA An entry visa is required for both tourist and business purposes. Obtain a visa only through official government websites, such as:

English language procedure (apply at least 10 days before departure). Italian language procedure (operating 24/7, including weekends) with simplified questionnaire and assistance from the Consulate in Milan. In case of last minute departures (less than 10 days notice), the visa can be obtained on arrival, under the sole responsibility of the traveler for entry authorization. Strictly avoid any work activity on a tourist visa; arrests and fines are common for those found working on visas that do not allow employment or business activities.

For purposes other than tourism, please consult in advance the Tanzanian Embassy in Rome or the Honorary Consul in Milan.

  1. COVID VACCINATION CERTIFICATE All travellers, including Tanzanian citizens and foreign residents returning to the country, must show proof of having completed their COVID vaccination course (as per their country’s guidelines) with a QR code certificate.

Accepted vaccines are in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. For vaccines accepted in mainland Tanzania, please refer to https://www.moh.go.tz , and for Zanzibar, please visit https://healthtravelznz.mohz.go.tz .

Alternatively, unvaccinated travelers or those unable to prove vaccination completion must present a negative COVID-19 test result upon arrival.

The only accepted test is the RT-PCR or NAAT (molecular swab) test, which must be taken by a nationally recognized and accredited laboratory in the country of departure within 72 hours prior to scheduled departure to Tanzania. Travelers arriving from countries with COVID-19 variants of particular concern, or those who have visited these countries in the last 14 days, must take a rapid test upon arrival at their own expense. The cost is USD 10 or TZS 23,000 for Tanzania mainland and USD 25 or TZS 58,000 for Zanzibar. Passengers who test positive must take a molecular RT-PCR test, which costs USD 50 for Tanzania mainland and USD 100 for Zanzibar.

Children up to 12 years old are exempt from COVID-19 testing and vaccination certificate presentation.
